Kalimantan also known as Borneo, one of the main islands in Indonesia consists of four provinces West, Central, South , East , and North Kalimantan.

It is the the 3rd largest island in the world offering the vast rain forests here where some of the most biodiverse areas in the world.

This is indeed a very large and beautiful island that popular with its features of beaches and ancient, biodiversity rainforest, home to wildlife including orangutans and clouded leopards.

Things to do in in Kalimantan

1. Learn more about Dayak Culture

Dayak culture still keep their culture alive and well, visit dayak tribe during traditional festivals and ceremonies is perfect time to learn more about Dayak tribe.

2. Visit the sacred Longhouses

The Dayak longhouse is the indigenous Dayak settlements along the Rivers. Visiting longhouse is a recommended way to experience the incredible culture, where they practice traditional medicine and mark their status with intricate body tattoos and wear heavy ear adornments.

3. Witnessing the pristine Wildlife & National Parks

Kalimantan offers a rewarding wildlife and beautiful nature, and it is definitely a must things to do in Indonesia for those who are a nature lover and have a spirit of adventure.

Kayan Mentarang, Betung Kerihun (Bukit Baka Bukit Raya) are the remote inland parks offers the best scenery and most pristine forests.

While the coastal park Gunung Palung, Tanjung Puting and Kutai is more accessible but sadly have been damaged by illegal logging to varying degrees. However, you are still able to witness the wildlife like the popular orangutans and proboscis monkeys here.

4. Take a river trips to the Mahakam

Take a trip up to Mahakam river is definitely one of the great things to do in Kalimantan, this trip allows you tp witness a local Dayak culture from very close and watch the wildlife at the same time.

5. Swimming and diving in East Kalimantan

Visit Derawan-Sangalaki archipelago off Berau in East Kalimantan, where you can enjoy Borneo’s best diving spots and it is indeed one of the world class diving spots. It offers incredible marine life featuring tame mantas,  turtles, great coral reefs, unique inland jellyfish-filled freshwater Kakaban lake and lots more.
