I have seen in some travel forums, that, it is very often people ask the same questions, ‘How to travel to Mount Bromo Java from Yogyakarta’. Which makes sense as from Yogyakarta – Mount Bromo is most common route to get there while doing your Java trip, besides Mount Bromo is one of the most popular things to do in Java.
I have hosted some friends at my place in Jogja and learned from them that different people have different preferences, some prefer the ‘free style’ travel, being able to plan your own trip at your own cost while others prefer the practical solution by using the travel agent.
Considering the reasons above, this article is written to give you the practical guide to travel to Mount Bromo Java from Yogyakarta, first is the free style one and the second option is using the travel agent service, I use free style as I love the word free.
I am not going to write the introduction on mount Bromo here, as I assume that you are in this page because you’ve known about it already, otherwise you wouldn’t decide to visit mount Bromo.
1. Travel to mount Bromo java from Yogyakarta independently (freestyle!)
The easiest and most convenient transport mode to use from Yogyakarta to mount bromo is using the public transport.
Take the train from either Tugu Station (Indonesian ; Stasiun Tugu) or from Lempuyangan station (Indonesian: Stasiun Lempuyangan), both will take you the nearest train station to Mount Bromo, which is Probolinggo train station. Stasiun tugu departure is for business and executive class , while stasiun Lempuyangan departure is for the economic class.
And what’s the difference between these three classes?
- Executive Class is Rp 315.000
- Business class is Rp 235.000
- Economy class is from Rp. 74,000 to Rp 94,000
However, if you book the seats in advance you might be able to get a cheaper price.
The executive class provides the blankets and pillows for each passenger and has better Air Conditioning than business class and economy.
The other deferent is the seats as shown in the following picture.
The executive class has faster travel time because they skip some stations, it makes the travel time shorter.
Location of the station
Stasiun tugu is located in the central of Jogjakarta while stasiun Lempuyangan is 2km away from the center.
You can book the train ticket from the official website of Indonesia railway https://tiket.kereta-api.co.id/, but please note that they only accept national CC. You can book from this site but then pay at the convenient stores like Alfamart, Alfamidi or Indomaret. Or you can just book and get the ticket issued directly from those convenient stores, more practical for sure.
Transport from Probolinggo to Mount Bromo ( Cemoro Lawang village)
You can take public bus (ELF bus) from Probolinggo Terminal (Bayu Angga terminal) to get to Cemoro Lawang, it is the closest village to Mount Bromo ( Cemoro Lawang) to Mount Bromo is about 2,5 km) Bromo which costs you about Rp 35,000 per person. And it takes about 1,5 hours. Please note that the public bus to Cemoro Lawang is the shared bus with 15 people in total, therefore, the driver is going leave to the destination once they have 15 people, so you will have to wait a little bit.
And there are hotels and homestays at Cemoro Lawang considering you will arrive here in the evening. The homestay and hotels a variety of rates from Rp 50,000 to Rp 500,000 per night.
And you also can either explore bromo by renting the jeep that cost you from Rp.400,000 to Rp. 600,000 or hike by your own and free of charge of course!
2. Using the travel agent/travel agent from Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo
Using the travel agent is another option and maybe not for everyone, you’ve got all arranged by the the tour agent but only you will have to pay more, and of course not flexible time. In Yogyakarta there many tour agents offer this trip if you want to.
So really, it depends on your preferences. And finally, enjoy the magnificent mount Bromo and stay safe!
