Mount Bromo Java Overview

One of the most popular places to visit in Indonesia is Mount Bromo Java, in Indonesian called “Gunung Bromo”, it is about 2770 above the sea level. The name of Bomo is Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, it means the Hindu creator god.
Mount bromo is part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (800 square km), the name of this national park is given after Mount Semeru (the highest in Java at 3,676m) and Mount Bromo, and also the Tengger people who live here.

It sits within a  the “Sea of Sand” (Javanese: Segara Wedi or Indonesian: Lautan Pasir), the fine volcanic sand.

The overall effect is unsettlingly unearthly, especially when compared to the lush green valleys all around the caldera. This area has been as a protected nature reserve since 1919.

How to get to Mount Bromo

Leaving to Bromo from Surabaya

Taking the flight from International Airport, Juanda, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia

If you want to travel directly to the nearest international airport then your choice is to fly to Juanda international airport in Surabaya, east Java. This airport has the direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hongkong, Jakarta and Bali.


If you want to catch the beautiful sunrise in Mount Bromo then you will have to from Surabaya around midnight. Or you could also stay overnight at the nearest hotel at mount Bromo to make sure you don’t miss the beautiful mount bromo sunrise.

From here by either hiring the tour agent, or travel independently by the train or public bus driving the Surabaya-Pasuruan-Wonokitri-Mt Bromo route, which takes about 2-3 hours.

Train from Surabaya to Probolinggo

Taking train within Java is most convenient and comfortable way and is also affordable. It is better to book the train seats in advance to make sure to get your seat. The train from Surabaya to Probolingo leaves from Gubeng Station.

Taking bus from Surabaya to probolinggo

The main bus station closest to Juanda international airport is Bungurasih bus station. There is damri bus that can take you to Bungarasih, or the other practical option (if you travel light) is by taking online motorbike taxi (gojek or grabbike), gojek and grabbike is for sure faster and cheaper.

Travelling by bus from Surabaya, you have to go to Bungurasih Terminal by using Damri and continue the trip to Arjosari Terminal by bus. This bus station has the easy connection to Probolinggo, it departs every 15 – 20 minutes which costs you Rp 18.000 for the economy class and Rp 30,000 for business class (called bus patas in Indonesia).

From Probolinggo to Mount Bromo

And from Probolinggo, it is good idea to do the share cost trip by renting the private car, comfortable and convenient, it costs about Rp 450,000 per car, so if you have 5 people to share with you just need to pay Rp 50,000, great value of money!

You may also take the public bus that takes about 10 to 15 people, and costs you around Rp 35,000 to Cemoro Lawang, the closest village to Mount Bromo. This public bus leave at 1600hrs or 1700hrs at the latest, so don’t be late!

From Malang to Mount Bromo

From Malang, you can get to a village called Ngadas or Jemplang. Ngadas is a nice quiet small village and not as touristy as Cemoro Lawang. It takes from 2 to 3 hours from Malang to Ngadas/Jemplang. The guest house (the community house) is available here if you need it.

Dry season is the best time to go to mount Bromo which gives you the opportunity to enjoy what mount bromo offers at most, it is around May to– September. Please note that Mount Bromo is not only popular within International but also domestic tourist, therefore avoid the peak seasons and weekend if you can.

It takes about 1-2 hours hiking time (depends on your fitness level) from the starting point to the top, and make sure to be at the top by 5.30am for the beautiful sunrise.

How to get around

If you physically fit, trekking or walking is great option to explore Mount Bromo, or you could also rent 4WD jeep or take horses across the sea of sand to the bottom of the steep stairs that leads to the crater.

Other things to do around Bromo

If you would like to experience the cultural sites of the east java capital, then Malang worth visiting. The continue to Ijen crater which takes about 6 hours drive away, here’s where you can witness the magnificent turquoise sculpture lake that exudes flames, blue fire at night and smoky white during the day.

Mount Bromo trip tips

You better take warm cloth/jackets with you and also gloves, it is cold up there, especially in the morning. You could also rent a jacket and gloves which costs about Rp 45,000 in total.

If you prefer to travel here independently, don’t get tempted by the guide offer. It is probably also great idea to travel to Bromo independently (maybe), so that you can be more flexible in managing your own budget and time, you will not miss anything by not taking the tour service.
